Compared to salt therapy, at-home humidifying technology is built on new science. Using vaporized moisture to treat respiratory illness has been around since the 1920s, however, (and a fact surprising to most people with a humidifier at home) its effectiveness not conclusively supported.

The device is essentially a humidifier which can be used with salt water, and is placing an insignificant amount of humidity into your room (131mL/hour when set to maximum). This means no mould or dampness will result from running the unit. For the purposes of using this as a salt pod, we recommend that you run it with the dial set to somewhere between 6pm (16 dots) and 7.30pm (19 dots) (25mL/hr to 33mL/hr). With time, you will get to work out the best setting for you which could be less than these settings.


Manufacturers often suggest we use distilled water and clean all the buildups out every so often. It is rarely heard that you should add something into a humidifier. But there is one exception: you will need to put salt in a humidifier under certain circumstances.


While it seems to be odd, it is a regular operation when using a specific type of humidifier. So why should you put salt in a humidifier, and how to do it? You will find the answer you need in this post.


Many humidifiers will heat the water and then evaporate the steam to humidity the air. We often call them warm mist humidifiers, warm steam humidifiers, or vaporizers. Among these warm mist humidifiers, some will heat the water through carbon electrodes connected to the electricity supply. Distilled water is not very conductive, and the current flowing between electrodes is small, making it is hard to provide heat for water. By adding some salt to the water, the conductivity will be improved by letting water molecules move freely. Accordingly, more heat will be available to boil the water, and more steam will come out from the humidifier. Aside from that, the boiling point will rise a bit.


In addition, the salt will become a part of the buildup at the end, which would clog the humidifier gradually. It also could become a breeding ground for molds and bacteria, which could pose risks to your health.


Therefore, stick to distilled water and clean it regularly if you have a cool-mist humidifier. How to add salt to a humidifier?Putting salt in a humidifier is just like a walk in the park. Just follow the steps in this section, and you are all set.


Usually, manufacturers will recommend how much salt you should add. The best bet is to check the manual. I advise you to test it before adding any salt because tap water in some areas contains sufficient impurities for a vaporizer to work.


Not every type of humidifier needs salt. You should only put salt in a humidifier that utilizes carbon electrodes to make steam. Adding salt to a cool-mist humidifier may even cause adverse effects. When adding salt to a humidifier, the salt will increase the conductivity of water and make the humidifier easier to produce vapor.


Dry argon is used as an ICP nebulizer gas to generate an aerosol and transport the sample to the plasma. However, samples containing high amounts of total dissolved solids (TDS) increase the likelihood of salt deposits forming at the tip of the nebulizer and injector, which can result in a failed analysis due to a drift in signal or an extinguished plasma. In order to handle a challenging sample matrix like one high in TDS, it is important to optimize the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) sample introduction system. This includes choosing a nebulizer with the ability to handle high TDS, a baffled cyclonic spray chamber to minimize droplet size and a large-bore injector to allow for longer run times. For best performance, the nebulizer gas can be humidified before it comes in contact with the sample, decreasing the likelihood of salt deposits forming at the nebulizer and injector tip. Adding an argon humidifier will reduce maintenance and the chance of an extinguished plasma due to a blocked nebulizer or injector.


As mentioned above, it is important to select the proper nebulizer when dealing with high TDS. The SeaSpray and DuraMist concentricstyle nebulizers are well-suited for handling high dissolved solids. A self-washing tip on the SeaSpray tolerates up to 20% for the most common salts. The DuraMist is a PEEK nebulizer capable of handling up to 30% TDS and is resistant to hydrofluoric acids (HF).5


With respect to the ICP torch injector tube, a larger bore (>2.0 mm i.d.) is recommended for high-TDS applications. Since the torch outer tube often suffers rapid devitrification, a demountable torch design such as the Glass Expansion D-Torch is suggested since it reduces torch consumable costs.6 Increasing the auxiliary argon flow will lift the plasma higher off the injector, slowing salt buildup at the injector tip. Extended rinses in between each sample are also recommended. However, lengthy rinses can be avoided by adding Elegra since it provides the greatest decrease in the rate of salt buildup at the injector tip.

Breathing water and salt suppresses the generation of respiratory droplets, and potentially reduces COVID-19 incidence and symptoms, researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), Massachusetts General Hospital, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found.
